sites of delhi

After the camel safari, we returned to Delhi for a few days for some sightseeing...

Humayan’s Tomb
the tomb of humayun, second mughal emperor of india, was built by his widow in 1570. it is of particular cultural significance because it was the first of its kind in india, inspiring other major architecture in india, including the taj mahal.

Red Fort
located in old delhi, there is a massive sandstone fort. the red fort was erected by mughal emperor shah jahan (who is also responsible for the taj mahal and jama masjid) when he moved his capital from agra to delhi. though imposing, the red fort was not a battle fort, but the royal residence. the palace complex consists of royal apartments, throne room, bathing quarters, a mosque, and extensive gardens.

Jama Masjid
also comissioned by shah jahan, the jama masjid is the largest and best-known mosque in india.

Is that you in the second last photo of this entry??? Did you find touring this site tiring or peaceful?

yes, it's me! the "guard" at the gate made me put on the smock even though i was wearing long pants, a t-shirt, and had a scarf to cover my hair if needed; but they were making all foreigners wear 'em.

the mosque was neither tiring nor peaceful. there were too many vendors; though ones trying to sell things were outside the site, there were people inside trying to con a few rupees for watching your shoes or something like that.
