Jai-ho-salmer

After Delhi Part 1, we packed our bags and made for Jaisalmer, the “Golden City” in the Rajasthan desert. Jaislamer was a bit off the beaten track, but Emily reeaaaaally wanted to ride camels. We braced ourselves for the 18 hour overnight train, the first of many to come.

After countless oddly houred inundations of “chai, chai” and an uneventful train ride later, we found ourselves in the comfort of the Shahi Palace. Their facilities include: a rooftop patio with a fantastic view, and more intruigingly, attached bathrooms with seperate shower stalls – what luxury.

We powdered our noses and headed to the Sonar Quila a.k.a. the Jaisalmer Fort. Situated atop a meanacing hilltop, the seemingly impenetrable fortress built in 1156 A.D. As one of the oldest surviving remnants of the region, the fort also has the honor of being distinguished as a live community, with residents, industry and a rather surpriising number of cows.
